Kent County teen fighting for his life after crash

CANNON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Newschannel 3) - A Kent County teen is in critical condition after a crash in Cannon Township.

Authorities tell us it happened near the intersection of Kies Street and Blakely Drive just after noon on Saturday.

Officials say a 55-year-old Courtland Township man was making a left turn onto Kies Street when it was nearly struck by an S.U.V. driving down Blakely Drive.

There were three 16-year-old young men in the vehicle.

They tried to swerve to miss the turning car but lost control.

The S.U.V. was sent crashing into a nearby ditch before stopping in a yard.

Officials tell us the teen who was in the back seat suffered from severe head trauma during the crash. He was found unresponsive at the scene.

That teen is in critical condition as of Sunday morning.

It isn't clear right now if he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the wreck.

Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
