The Kalamazoo City Commission was sworn in Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, and the newest commissioner is now on the clock.

Eric Cunningham took the oath of office Monday after winning election last week.

Incumbent Commissioners Erin Knott and Jack Urban also were sworn in to serve their next terms.

Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell was re-elected to a sixth straight term and said he has big plans for the next two years.

"My goal is to move our strategic vision forward," Hopewell said. "It's been 15 months gathering information from our citizens on what we aspire to. So whether that's shared prosperity, or diversity, complete neighborhoods, non-motorized transportation. ... All of those things are on the agenda. And we have an amazing opportunity over the next two, four, 10 years to make our citizens' ideas become a reality."

One of the major projects on the city's plate right now is managing a $70 million private donation through the Foundation for Excellence.

The Foundation for Excellence has already supported a youth employment program, lead water pipe replacements and improvements at parks.
