Judge upholds 21-year-old's life sentence at re-sentencing hearing

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A convicted killer will not get a chance at freedom.

Just after 4:00 p.m., a Kalamazoo judge re-sentenced 21-year-old Dallas McDade Jr. to life in prison without parole.

McDade was convicted of murder in the 2010 shooting death of Eric Jenkins when he was 17.

His attorney argued McDade deserved a second chance, but a judge did not agree.

McDade's sentence was overturned last year after a Supreme Court ruling found that sentencing youth offenders to life was a form of cruel and unusual punishment.

McDade's attorney says he deserves a chance at parole one day.

Prosecutors countered that McDade already had a long criminal record by the time the murder took place years ago, and should stay in prison for life.
