Hate crime awareness coalition to meet in Kalamazoo Thursday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - There's been speculation that the beating death of Comstock Township native Bryan Higgins in San Francisco may be a hate crime.

Police in California are investigating that possibility.

Here in Kalamazoo, however, a hate crime awareness coalition has formed, and its first meeting is Thursday night.

The group was started last month, after Newschannel 3 broke the news that a lesbian couple's home was broken into on the north side, and someone painted hate speech all over the walls.

The meeting runs from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., at the Douglass Community Association, on Patterson Street.

Newschannel 3 will be in attendance, and will have more coverage on the meeting.
