GRPS to lay off staff
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Grand Rapids Public Schools is expecting to layoff dozens of staff members in anticipation of an enrollment shortfall this school year.
M-Live reports school board members approved sending notices to 40 teachers and other staffers, including paraprofessionals and student advocates.
Officials estimate they'll lose about 400 students compared to last school year.
The district is facing a $13.5 million deficit this upcoming year.
According to M-Live, the layoffs are based on job performance through state law requirements that make districts favor teachers rated effective and highly effective.
Officials say they hope to bring back some of those staff members if more students enroll.
