Great Lakes Burn Camp underway in Mattawan
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kids at the Great Lakes Burn Camp are enjoying the sunny weather Thursday.
It's happening at Pretty Lake in Mattawan, and it's a week-long retreat for children ages 6 to 17 who have survived a burn-related injury.
One of the best parts of the camp is that it's free to attend.
Counselors say the camp is about healing, self-esteem, and boosting confidence.
"It's a magical place, where we have seen so many kids' self-esteem just blossom," said PR Director Mark Avery. "We've had kids come here not even speaking, to thriving and not wanting to leave at the end of the week."
The Great Lakes Burn Camp also holds a retreat in Northern Michigan during the winter.
That camp gets underway on February 20.
