KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Multiple people are shot at an apartment complex near Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo overnight.
Newschannel 3's Jessica Wheeler was on scene just moments after those shots were fired. She is live at the scene.
Hours after shots were fired, there is still a heavy public safety presence. Crime scene investigators have been combing for evidence at the Campus Habitat Apartments, right across the street from the campus of Western Michigan University.
We got on scene just after 3 a.m. as officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were still responding to the call. Paramedics were working on one of the victims and an ambulance, carrying another victim, was speeding away.
Police tell Newschannel 3 there was a party in the parking lot and a fight broke out. They are investigating the possibility that someone threw a chair into the crowd and then shots were fired.
In all, four people were shot. Officers say they found two 20-year-old men with bullet wounds to the legs, at the apartment complex. A short time later, a 22-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg showed up at Bronson Medical Center, along with a 20-year-old woman who had been shot in the rear end.
Witnesses tell Newschannel 3 it was a very scary scene. They heard more than a dozen shots and then people screaming.
One witness who wanted to remain anonymous says, "I only heard about 12-15 gunshots. It was like a 'bang, bang, bang.' We know the difference between gunshots and fireworks."
Another witness says, "It's kind of a scary feeling, I guess, people getting shot. It kind of makes you question what's going on around here."
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety tells Newschannel 3 none of the victims were WMU students. At this point, there are no suspects.
