Former funeral home director sentenced for embezzlement, forgery, racketeering

IONIA COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A former funeral home director will spend up to 4 years in jail for forging bogus death certificates and collecting about $500,000 in insurance money.

In May, an Ionia County jury convicted Marti Schrauben on 26 counts, including embezzlement, forgery, and racketeering.

Prosecutors say he submitted dozens of claims to insurance companies for people who were still alive while he worked at Lehman Funeral Homes.

A judge sentenced Schrauben to between 16 months and 4 years in prison.
