First murder trial for Zachary Patten to begin in Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Jury selection begins Wednesday for a man accused of killing two people in West Michigan.
Zachary Patten's trial for murder will begin in Kalamazoo.
Police said he shot and killed Graciela Portillo-Esparza, 31, at the Americana Estates Mobile Home Park last July.
Witnesses said Patten was arguing with Portillo-Esparza's brother, who is the ex-boyfriend of Patten's then-girlfriend. Portillo-Esparza was shot after getting in between the men.
Then police said Patten drove to his ex-wife's home in Constantine and murdered her new husband. Investigators said he forced his way into the home and shot Shane Richardson, 29, who later died at the hospital.
Patten then drove to South Bend, Ind. and crashed his car near the airport.
He was arrested and later charged with murder in both Kalamazoo and St. Joseph Counties.
