UPDATE: One person killed in early morning apt. fire in Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) -Authorities say one person was killed in an early morning fire at a senior community apartment building in Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers say the female victim was trapped on the seventh floor at the Crosstown Parkway Senior Community at the corner of Crosstown and Howard.
Authorities say the woman had to be rescued from the balcony, where there was heavy smoke and flames in the apartment.
She was taken to Bronson hospital where she passed away.
Monday morning, the woman was identified as 74-year-old Barbara Posey, of Kalamazoo.
Authorities are still working to learn what caused the fire.
Heated buses were brought in for the residents as housing arrangements are made. They were all taken to the YMCA. Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety tells us any family members trying to connect with their loved ones can call the YMCA and check if they are there, but will not be able to speak with them on the phone at this time. The American Red Cross tells Newschannel 3 that from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Monday, displaced residents will be escorted back into the building to retrieve some of their belongings.
