Dr. Lukasz Niec set to return to work; parole board reviews pardon request
KALAMAZOO, Mich. —
Doctor Lukasz Niec says he plans to be back on the job on Thursday at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Niec returned home last Thursday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested him at his home in mid-january and he spent weeks in the Calhoun County Jail.
Niec is a permanent green card holder who has lived in the u-s almost his whole life... But he is *not an official u-s citizen.
Dr. Lukasz Niec said, “I guess I probably should have citizenship earlier, because I would have not been in this. I never expected it. I just never knew about these laws. That was the biggest thing, the anxiety of it's not like a typical case."
ICE officials say it was a child abuse accusation from Niec's ex-girlfriend that put him on their radar.
U.S. immigrations says two misdemeanor crimes from when Niec was a teenager are enough to have him deported to Poland.
Michigan's parole board is now reviewing a request to pardon Niec's crimes.
