Dozens raise money for local youth swim programs
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Dozens of people hit the water Saturday to raise money for local youth swim programs.
More than 70 people participated in the Goguac Lake swim in Battle Creek Saturday.
The event is in its 87th year, and all the proceeds go to the local YMCA for their 'Begin to Swim' program.
Organizers of the event say the program is open to all kids.
"We work with some of the local shelters to get some of the underprivileged kids in here and really give them opportunity to do something fun and to keep them safe," said Race Director Rebecca Lillie.
The race was held in memory of local swim coach Leroy Sparks.
He coached swimming and diving for many years at Battle Creek Public Schools, earning two national championships and producing 75 All-Americans.
