Deputies warn of possible Craigslist scam

CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Deputies in Calhoun County are sending out a warning about a possible Craiglist scam.

Deputies say they’ve received three complaints about people being ripped off on the site.

In each case thieves answered ads for items posted on Craigslist. Deputies say the suspect offers to buy the product and then sends a check from a third party worth much more than what they owe. Then the ‘buyer’ asks the seller to cash the check and wire some of the money somewhere else.

If you get one of these calls, the sheriff’s office says you should always speak personally to the buyer over the phone and request that your bank examine any check before depositing it.

When in doubt, contact the police.
