Deck collapse leaves at least 11 injured

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Ottawa County Central Dispatch confirms at least 14 people are hurt after a deck collapse Thursday night.

It happened just after 7:00 p.m. at Weaver House, an outdoor event venue at Pine Bend Park in West Olive -- north of Holland. The building is operated by Ottawa County Parks Department.

North Ottawa Community Health System was having an event at Weaver House tonight to thank donors who helped expand the hospital's emergency room. Deputies say when the deck collapsed doctors who were already on hand sprang into action.

"The event had approximately 118 people attending. The estimate is that about 25-35 people were out on the deck. As they were on there, the deck gave way in the middle and collapsed inward," said Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker.

Most people were treated at the home, but two people did go to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
