Couple donates bikes to bring Christmas cheer
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo couple is bringing Christmas cheer to dozens of local children, thanks to a unique new project.
Steve and Gayle Zientek own Network Team Homes Realty and decided for every house they closed on this year, they would donate a bike to Toys for Tots.
This year they had 32 closings, so they donated 32 bikes.
NewsChannel 3 was there as they loaded up a truck at the Walmart on 9th Street with nearly 1500 dollars in new bikes, in an array of sizes.
The Zienteks say they got the idea from a broker in Howell who's done something similar for the last seven years and they wanted to bring the same joy here to Kalamazoo.
"We've had a really great year and this was just a really fun way for us to give back to the kids in our community," Gayle says. "The feeling I had when I walked into the back room here and saw the bikes, it was just exciting. Hopefully we can double it next year!"
To keep things fair, the 32 bikes will be raffled out at random during the annual Toys for Tots distribution Thursday and Friday in Battle Creek.
In total, Toys for Tots is expected to provide gifts for 10,000 kids in Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties this Christmas.
