OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Attention West Michigan shoppers! A superstore chain is one step closer to opening its doors.
Costco is being built in Oshtemo Township. It will be the main store in a 40-acre development at the corner of Stadium Drive and Drake Road.
Newschannel 3's Aaron Dimick checked out the site today giving a first look at what the development will look like.
Costco is finally starting to take shape. Walls are popping up in Oshtemo Township, which are set to hold shoppers and discount merchandise, in a matter of months.
Construction on the superstore is checking out through the fast lane.
"They have a pretty sophisticated construction schedule. In about 83 days, they can take a flat pad and get their store up, stocked and ready to open," says Oshtemo Township planning director Greg Milliken.
Plans submitted to Oshtemo Township show a 150,000 square-foot retail palace. There will even be a place to gas up.
Milliken says the big legal roadblocks and permits are out of the way: "You can actually see the plans that were on paper begin to come to fruition on the site. You're seeing walls go up. You're seeing the roads, internally, beginning to take shape, more than just pushing dirt around."
He says this development goes far beyond extra shopping options and discounted prices. "It's going to be a boost for tax revenue, but also employment. They're going to hire 200 some employees, so that's great for the community," Milliken says.
Costco will be part of a development called The Corner at Drake. A planning sketch shows a new outdoor shopping center planned around it. Rumor has it there will be stores, restaurants and maybe even a hotel. "To date, no specific plans, no site plans have been filed officially with the township," Milliken says.
Milliken expects other businesses will boom -- close to this area.
"It's a gateway project for the township, it's the gateway to the city of Kalamazoo," Milliken says.
The store is set to open in November, just in time for Black Friday shopping.
