College student explains her side of controversial photograph

Gillian Nemeth claims she was trying to show her friends how strong the tails of dachshund dogs are, so she grabbed Diesel and held him in the air.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Classmates of a West Michigan college student want her expelled.

The reason? A photo showing her holding her dog, Diesel, in the air by his tail.

Gillian Nemeth says the picture was taken at an apartment near the Grand Valley State University campus this weekend.

Nemeth claims she was trying to show her friends how strong the tails of dachshund dogs are, so she grabbed Diesel and held him in the air.

Newschannel 3 reached out to Nemeth Wednesday to get her side of the story.

In a statement, she says she made a poor decision and profusely apologizes.

Also in the statement, Nemeth goes on to say:

Please know that I honestly did not believe I was injuring diesel in any way that evening. Due to the level of concern, I will be taking Diesel in for an examination to make sure he was not injured and remains in excellent health.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says it spoke to the prosecutor and veterinarians about possible charges, but they don't believe Nemeth broke the law and she won't face criminal charges.

GVSU says it does not condone what happened, but it's not clear if any disciplinary action will be taken.
