City and building owner in court battle over flooding of Plaza Towers
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A fight between the City of Grand Rapids and Plaza Towers Complex is expected to take place Friday in court.
The Plaza Towers is suing the city over claims that a pedestrian walkway built into the downtown floodwall in the 1990s exposed the building to floodwaters last April.
City officials argue the floodwalls were never breached during that flood and it was a history of structural problems that caused the tower's garage to fill with water.
Last year's extreme flooding in the Grand River caused city officials to declare a state of emergency to protect the city.
