Charges dismissed in child abuse case

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Charges have been dismissed in the case of a woman accused of child abuse in Calhoun County.

Sara Mendez-Lucas was in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing, as she faces charges of third-degree child abuse, but Newschannel 3 learned at around 4:00 p.m. that charges were dismissed after witnesses recanted their stories.

Lucas was arrested late last month at a home on Rittenhouse Avenue in Battle Creek.

Police had been checking on a tip when they say they found a 14-year-old tied up in the dining room with belt marks on his body.

The boy had run away from home just three days earlier.

The hearing was originally scheduled for July 28th, but was postponed until Monday.

Newschannel 3 will continue to follow the story and will keep you apprised of events as they develop.
