Calhoun Co. teen charged with arson in mill fire

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Calhoun County teenager has been charged with arson after police say he set fire to the Bedford Mill.

Police say 19-year-old David Bax started the fire at the mill around 11:30 Tuesday night, and it's not the first time he's done it.

In court Monday, the judge reminded Bax that he was out on bond for setting fire to the mill earlier this year, when he allegedly did it again.

Bax was charged with third degree arson Monday--a felony.

Firefighters say in May Bax set fire to the old Bedford Mill because he was offered some money to do so.

That time, crews were able to put it out and save the building, but this time, that wasn't the case.

Just under a week ago, flames ripped through the mill again. It took 3 hours and 40,000 gallons of water to put it out.

The old mill opened in 1855, but has been closed for decades.

It was officially condemned years ago when firefighters found the building full of termites.

This winter, the roof had officially collapsed under the weight of snow.

The Bedford Township fire chief told Newschannel 3 that there was no way they could get inside, and that it was strictly a defensive attack.

Bax is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on July 28.
