Calhoun Co. Animal Shelter looking for help caring for cats saved from home in Athens

CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Calhoun County Animal Shelter needs help caring for more than 100 cats that were removed from a home in Athens Thursday.

Crews have been working all night to care for these cats and search for local animal rescue organizations that can help treat the animals and get them ready for adoption.

According to a Facebook post from the Calhoun County Animal Shelter, they are caring for 114 cats right now.

Employees with Kalamazoo Animal Rescue tell Newschannel 3 they plan to take in 40 of the cats as soon as they are released by animal control officials.

Thursday afternoon, first responders removed the cats from a home on South A Avenue, in Athens.

The home had to be evacuated due to high levels of methane gas.

Animal rescue crews say there are still several dozens cats left in the home that could not be captured.

We will be following this story throughout the afternoon, and have the latest details as they become available.
