Boatyard Brewery to celebrate life of Ed Switalski during Kalamazoo Beer Week
KALAMAZOO, Mich. —
Kalamazoo toasts to the unofficial start of Kalamazoo's Beer Week.
The main event doesn't start until tomorrow, but Boatyard Brewery started things off tonight with a kick-off party.
Kalamazoo Beer Week runs Saturday through Sunday January 21.
Boatyard Brewery is using the week-long celebration to honor the memory of fallen Comstock fire chief Ed Switalski.
They are releasing a new beer that was named by Switalski's wife, Holly.
It is a bourbon-barrel aged and cherry whisky-barrel aged red ale. The beer is made from another brew honoring Switalski, the Fast Eddie red ale.
That beer was released last fall.
"They came in about six weeks, eight weeks after Ed's passing and wanted to do something to remember him,” Brian Steele, co-founder of Boatyard Brewery, said. “It started on an August afternoon, and it keeps blossoming."
A portion of the proceeds made from purchasing the new beer will go toward helping build a memorial for Chief Switalski.
Boatyard Brewing will be hosting another fundraiser on January 20.
