5-year-old injures hand in accidental gun discharge

A 5-year-old Kalamazoo boy suffered a gunshot wound to the hand Sunday in what investigators said was an accidental discharge of a handgun.

The Township of Kalamazoo Police Department said in a written statement on the incident that investigators determined the child obtained a loaded firearm from an unsecured safe and shot himself in the hand. The child was taken to a local hospital by his family members, where he was treated and released for the injury.

Investigators are continuing to question the witnesses. And the police department issued a reminder for those who own firearms: "Children should never be unsupervised around firearms and all firearms should be stored unloaded and locked within a safe or secured with a trigger locking system."
