At least 51 vehicles involved in I-94 pileup; eastbound lanes reopened near Galesburg exit
At least one person was taken to a hospital by ambulance as emergency teams assist motorists in a pileup crash on eastbound Interstate 94 near Galesburg.
Early estimates put the number of vehicles involved at about 50, but in an afternoon statement, the Michigan State Police said the crash involves 51 vehicles over a stretch of three miles.
The crash occurred about 12:30 p.m. during periods of heavy snowfall. At that point, emergency crews were working to remove a jack-knifed semi at the Galesburg exit ramp.
All lanes were reopened at 6:20 p.m. on Friday.
Several injuries were reported, but all are minor in nature, the state police said in a written statement on the incident.
I-94 eastbound was closed at Sprinkle Road (exit 80) for several hours and motorists were encouraged to seek alternate routes.
State police officers are being assisted on the scene by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
State police officials also issued a reminder to drivers to exercise extra care when traveling in snowy conditions. Reducing speed and increasing following distance between vehicles allows drivers time to react to hazards which can prevent these multi-vehicle crashes.
