18-year-old man arrested when found with missing 14-year-old girl and assaulting deputies

18-year-old man arrested when found with missing 14-year-old girl and assaulting deputies.

A Calhoun County man was arrested after sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and then striking deputies in the face when they came to pick her up.

Newschannel 3's Anna Giles reported on the sheriff's warning to parents about the role social media played in this incident.

A Calhoun County family is breathing a sigh of relief because their 14-year-old daughter was found after she ran away with an older boy she met online.

Calhoun County Sheriff Matt Saxton said, “We're just thankful the girl is home safe with her parent today. The deputies did a great investigation to locate her within 14 hours of her disappearing."

The 14-year-old girl disappeared from her home on R Dr. S, outside of Homer around 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning and, around 14 hours later, deputies found her at a home on C Dr. N near Albion.

Deputies said when they located the girl that Alfredo Lopez, the 18-year-old she had run away with, attacked deputies.

Lopez allegedly punched one of the deputies in the face several times. Deputies said they used a stun gun on him, but that didn't work.

Deputies said Lopez kept attacking them for several minutes before they finally got him in handcuffs.

Lopez had picked the girl up from her home and the two teens weren't strangers.

Saxton said this case shows how important it is for parents to know what their kids are doing online.

He said, "There's all sorts of options. Sometimes as simple as saying, ‘No’ to your teenager, and I’m not saying in this situation the parents did anything wrong either, but have your teenagers use their social media or electronic devices in public areas of the home."

Lopez faces charges for assaulting police, resisting arrest and sexual abuse.
