UPDATE: 1 dead, 3 others hurt after crash shuts down portion of U.S. 131
ALLEGAN COUNTY (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - One person is dead and three others are in the hospital after a single-car crash Sunday morning.
It happened on U.S. 131 near the Wayland exit around 2:30 a.m. A portion of the highway was closed to traffic, along with 12th street which is the access road next to U.S. 131, for several hours.
Officials tell Newschannel 3 when they arrived on scene, one person in the car was dead. Three others were taken to Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids with minor injuries.
Allegan County deputies said 4 teenage girls were in the vehicle. They said a passenger in the backseat was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle is under investigation for a possible DUI.
U.S. 131 is back open to traffic, but 12th street next to the freeway is still closed.
