Comstock Fire Chief Ed Switalski died when he was hit by a motorist while responding to a crash on the interstate.

While such deadly incidents are uncommon, police officers include close calls along speeding traffic among their most dangerous threats.

Michigan has a move over law, but officers will tell you that all too many drivers fail to change to a safer lane. And a ride-along with officers provides proof of their concerns.

Newschannel 3's Kirk Mason joined some Michigan State Police officers on the road for a look at life on the line.
