Doctor accused of performing liposuction in pole barn suspended for health code violations
LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The license for a local doctor accused of performing liposuction in an unfinished pole barn is now suspended.
This comes just weeks after Newschannel 3 learned the Allegan County Health Department warned Dr. Bradley Bastow's patients about the allegedly unsanitary facility operated by the doctor just north of South Haven.
Newschannel 3's investigative reporter Cody Combs is looking over the disciplinary action being taken against Dr. Bastow.
The order of suspension from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, which we received late Tuesday morning, suspended Bastow's license for the following findings:
- Performing liposuction procedures in unsanitary conditions in an unfinished pole barn;
- Improperly disposing and storing medical waste;
- Improperly dispensing and recording the dispensing of controlled substances;
- Improperly co-mingling human and animal drugs; and
- Taking a controlled substance from the facility for personal use.
Because of these findings, Bastow's physicians license has been suspended.
Allegan County deputies were called to the pole barn on April 20, for what started as a medical call, as a patient being treated there was having trouble breathing. Shortly thereafter, health department officials warned those who were treated and had liposuction at the pole barn facility in Glenn about the possible unsanitary conditions of the facility.
Newschannel 3 spoke with Cherokee Mathis, a former intern who says she spotted major red flags while working for Dr. Bastow, and noticed unsanitary conditions, including animals, living in the pole barn.
"One day a dog actually walked in there when someone was getting lipo, and she asked, is that dog supposed to be here? That can cause major infections," she said.
For several weeks, we reached out to Dr. Bastow to comment on these allegations, including just before this broadcast, but we have yet to hear back.
Again, as of this morning, Dr. Bastow's medical license has been suspended.
Newschannel 3 will continue to follow this story, and will let you know the next steps as they happen.
