Traveling exhibit to highlight 50 years of screening newborns

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Monday, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids is celebrating 50 years of helping babies get a healthy start in life.

Doctors from the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit will join with the Michigan Department of Community Health to unveil a traveling exhibit that highlights 50 years of newborn screening in the state.

Newborn screening is required by Michigan law, It's designed to find those babies with rare and serious disorders that require early treatment.

Over the years, the screening has helped 4,000 children get the care they need.
