State Senate committee discusses breast density legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - On Thursday, a Senate committee met for a hearing to discuss legislation about breast density and cancer.

If the bill is approved, doctors would have to alert women if they have dense breast tissue, which means it is harder to find cancer during a traditional mammogram.

Studies suggest that breast cancer risk in women may be tied to the rate at which their breast-tissue density changes.

Breast density is already known to be a strong and independent risk factor for breast cancer.
