Researchers find possible gene therapy breakthrough in HIV treatment

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have made a potential breakthrough in the fight against HIV.

They are reporting that they were able to genetically modify the immune cells of 12 HIV positive patients to resist infection.

They mimicked a gene mutation, removing a protein the virus needs to infect cells.

The altered cells were then put back into the patients.

The therapy decreased the virus in some patients, including one who had no detectable levels of HIV.
