Mushroom may help fight cancer

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - New research is showing shiitake mushrooms may be able to fight cervical cancer.

Doctors say an extract in the fungus has been found to kill the sexually transmitted virus HPV that can cause cervical cancer.

In a study using mice researchers say it led to the eradication of HPV within 90 days.

It also decreased the rate of cervical tumor growth.

Researchers say the results are promising, but more research is needed.
