Los Angeles sheriff's deputies work to keep healthy and safe
LOS ANGELES (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Law enforcement officials are using a little friendly competition to help keep deputies healthy and safe.
According to the FBI, some 80 percent of those working in law enforcement are overweight.
So, hoping to shed the old 'cop and doughnut' stereotype, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department kicked off a 10-week weight loss challenge Thursday.
It pits those in uniform against their non-uniformed co-workers as they work to shed pounds.
The department says it has partnered with a weight loss clinic to offer the free program to its staff, which combines exercise and healthy meal planning to help participants slim down.
