HPV detection test causing controversy

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new high tech tool to detect cervical cancer is now sparking a controversial debate.

The new test comes from Roche and uses DNA to detect the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer.

It wants the FDA to approve its test as a first-choice option for cervical cancer screening.

But dozens of patient advocate groups say the test could displace the current test known as a pap smear, which they say is simpler, cheaper and more established in medical circles.
