FDA gives special approval to meningitis vaccine at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An otherwise unapproved vaccine is now available for the first time at Princeton University.

The University has reported 8 cases of Meningitis-B since March.

In response to the outbreak, the FDA gave Princeton special approval to distribute a vaccine to students.

The vaccine, Bexsero, is used in Europe and Australia, but it is not otherwise approved for use in the United States.

Princeton University will make the first dose available this week, Monday through Thursday.

A second dose will be provided in February.
