Vehicle crashes during 'getaway' after theft at Portage Walmart

PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Portage Department of Public Safety is searching for a second person after an incident at a local Walmart and a vehicle crash.

It happened on Shaver Road just after 4am Thursday, July 31st.

An employee told police he approached the subject, but the man took off in a 2008 Mercury.

He drove off at a high rate of speed, exiting the lot onto Shaver Road at West Melody. He lost control and crashed on the east side of Shaver Road on the train tracks.

The driver, identified as a 25 year old Vicksburg resident, was detained and arrested on suspicion of operating under the influence of drugs.

A passenger, described as a tall black male in his 30s wearing a white coat, fled on foot and was not located.
