BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A teenager is in critical condition after crashing his SUV into a tobacco shop in Battle Creek.

Police say the 17-year-old boy reportedly accelerated through the intersection of Riverside and Columbia Avenue, and did not brake before he crashed into The Tobacco Shoppe.

He was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Police Chief tells Newschannel 3 they're trying to rule out whether this RAV-4 is under a Toyota recall for a stuck accelerator.

If you take a look at the video from when the crash first happened early Thursday morning, the SUV's caution lights were flashing--something investigators say doesn't happen on its own.

They say it could have been the driver, or possibly bumped on by a first responder.

A lieutenant tells Newschannel 3 they're looking into every possibility. They plan to check the RAV's computer system to see what the vehicle was doing at the time of the crash.

He adds the 17-year-old driver has no prior medical history, but doctors are running tests.

The lieutenant says the teen was awake when first responders got on-scene, but did not make sense when they tried to talk to him.

They're also working on getting power back on to the building to see the store's surveillance video.
