New laws curbing sale of meth ingredients

Updated: Thursday, August 21, 2014

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - New laws are curbing the sale of ingredients used to make meth.

Lawmakers say a new tracking system, used by pharmacies and law enforcement, has led to lower sales of products containing pseudoephedrine and ephedrine.

It's targeting the practice of 'smurfing,' which refers to meth-makers shopping stores and buying small quantities of the ingredients until they have enough to make meth.

Statistics show between January and July of this year, 7 percent fewer boxes of medication with pseudoephedrine and ephedrine were purchased.
