GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan mother is working to empower others and reach kids at a young age. She wants to build them up before they head down the wrong path.

Robin Marvel has already published six books, at the age of 35, now this mother of five is turning to magazines aimed at help the most vulnerable population.

It's something she never dreamed she would accomplish with the way her life started out.

"I actually had a really troublesome childhood," said Marvel.

Marvel grew up in an abusive family, surrounded by drugs, alcohol and homelessness.

"I ended up pregnant at 16," said Marvel.

It was that pregnancy that led her to where she is now.

"When I found out I was pregnant and they told me it was a girl I said we are not going to be statistics," said Marvel.

Marvel has worked hard ever since to make sure of that and she's now helping others too.

She's written six books, has a charity called United Hands of Change and travels the country speaking to others who are where she's been.

"I'm really big on people knowing their worth because that's what really changed my life was learning who I am and starting to respect myself. It changed my perspective on everything."

Now she's focusing on her attention younger, hoping to reach kids before they need help.

This month her new free nationwide magazine called You Are Enough is launching. It's all about empowering young kids.

"It's really important that kids at a young age start learning to love themselves so they don't have to be an adult and fix it, like most of us are doing as adults."

Teaching kids to respect themselves, even as toddlers. It's a message she hopes will resonate with parents today.
