KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A Kalamazoo police officer saves the life of a woman, choking in her car.

It happened in the 4100 block of S. Burdick Street, around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Officer Jason Gates pulled a car over for a red light violation. As he walked toward the vehicle, he noticed the driver was not breathing.

He hit the woman on the back, trying to free the blockage. When that didn’t work, he used the Heimlich maneuver, which dislodged the hot dog from her throat.

The woman began crying and hugging Gates, thanking him for saving her life.
