STURGIS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A St. Joseph County shift sergeant was involved in a hit and run crash around 7pm on Saturday, August 2nd.
 
During this incident the sergeant was southbound on Shimmel Road near Mintdale.

As the sergeant drove Southbound on Shimmel Rd, a vehicle driven by Stephen Orion Stockwell, 22, proceeded to pull into the right of way of the patrol unit driven by the Sgt.

Stockwell's vehicle struck the patrol unit on the passenger's side then fled eastbound onto Mintdale Rd.

According to a release, Stockwell ran several stop signs before crashing into a guard rail.

After Stockwell was taken into custody he admitted to officers that he had a methamphetamine lab in the trunk of his vehicle.

Officers subsequently located one active "one pot" meth lab and 4 old "one pot" meth labs and several components used in the manufacture of methamphetamine in the trunk of the vehicle.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department was assisted by Sturgis Police Department and Tri Township Fire Department.

The Sheriff's Department is urging any witnesses who may have seen the accident occur at the intersection of Shimmel Rd and Mintdale Rd to please call the sheriff's dept at 269-467-9045 x323.
