MATTAWAN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - New charges are expected to be filed Thursday against the man police say held them at bay in Mattawan for nearly 4-hours.

This is a story we first brought to you as breaking news Wednesday night at 5:00.

It started around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon when authorities went to the suspect's house to serve two felony warrants.

One was for resisting an officer, another was for fleeing and eluding police.

Friends identified the suspect as Nick Kowal.

Police say he barricaded himself in his car behind the Cask and Keg on Red Arrow Highway.

Friends tell Newschannel 3 Kowal is not a bad guy.

"Everybody has a breaking point in life. I mean we're all human," said Keith Kellis. "He is a good kid, with a good past, the last year he's gone through some stuff."

The suspect damaged a few police cars when he tried ramming his way out of the back of the building, but eventually did surrender.

He's now facing possible charges of assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon.
