Building considered total loss following morning Kalamazoo fire Updated: Friday, August 29, 2014 KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kalamazoo Public Safety is working to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in the Stuart neighborhood.The fire broke out around 6:00 a.m., on Woodward Avenue, just off of W. Kalamazoo Avenue.It took crews more than an hour to control it.KDPS says flames were already shooting from the roof when they arrived.The home is divided into 8 apartments, and four of them were filled at the time.One of the men who lives inside, Otho Ulrich, says he smelled somke and tried to put the fire out, but it was too intense--so he alerted all of his neighbors and then ran outside."It was probably 15 feet tall flames coming out of this part of the roof they broke open. It was touching the trees behind the house," he said. "It's pretty devastating. I'm glad that I'm okay, and that everybody is okay, but basically everything that I own was just destroyed."The Red Cross is helping those displaced.The building is considered a total loss.
