Kids take part in Junior Police Academy

Updated: Thursday, July 31, 2014

HOLLAND, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It might be summer, but class is in session at the Holland Department of Public Safety.

About two dozen 7th and 8th graders participated in a mock crash downtown as part of the Junior Police Academy.

Each student had a different role, from victims to police officers, firefighters and EMTs.

“We had to get them out of the car. It was pretty hard because the car doors were not even open. So we had to get them out other ways,” said participant Shay Grigg.

“If you are in the Junior Police Academy, you can experience this. I don't know any other place where you can ride in a police car, get on a back board, maybe see some of this stuff and the coolest thing is that is it all free. It is something in Holland here that we offer and we get a lot if good feedback and the kids like it,” said Officer Dan Keuning.

The three week academy gives kids hands-on experience. They not only learn about teamwork, but about the court system and the county 911 dispatch center as well.
