Updated: Monday, August 11, 2014

UKRAINE (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Local authorities in eastern Ukraine say more than 100 prisoners have escaped a high-security facility after it was hit by a shell.

It happened in the rebel stronghold of Donetsk.

A city council spokesman says a jail riot followed the direct rocket hit that claimed the life of at least one inmate.

Ukrainian government forces have over the past week intensified their push on Donetsk and have succeeded in surrounding it.
