Iceland prepares for volcanic eruption story image

ICELAND (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Iceland is preparing for a volcanic eruption that could impact air travel for all of Europe.

Iceland has been rocked by thousands of small intense earthquakes since Saturday.

Government officials raised the aviation alert level for the risk of a possible volcanic eruption to orange, the second-most severe level.

Four years ago, an eruption in Iceland spewed enough ash into the atmosphere to shut down most of the airspace in Europe for six days.
