(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - American journalist Peter Curtis is now back in the United States after being freed by an extremist group in Syria.

Officials say an al-Qaida-linked militant group in Syria held Curtis for 22 months.

In a statement, Curtis says he has been "touched and moved" by the warm reception and is "deeply indebted" to those who worked for his release.
