KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Students at Alamo Elementary School heard from a World War II veteran Tuesday.

After seeing dozens of veterans being flown to Washington, D.C. to see the national memorials as part of the local Honor Flight, the kids sent thank you letters to those veterans.

On Tuesday, 94-year-old veteran Catherine Vandebunte visited the students.

Vandebunte worked in California during the war, aiding soldiers in getting back home and shipping out.

She told the kids about her war experience.

"I feel it's an honor that they want to have me tell the story, and because it was a very difficult time in my life; and at this age, these children will be facing similar opportunities," Vandebunte told Newschannel 3 of the experience.

The class plans to write letters again for an Honor Flight that will take place in the spring.
