(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A lot of smokers are turning to electronic--or 'e-cigarettes'--as an alternative to traditional tobacco but a new study finds that may not do much good if they're trying to quit.

Researchers at the University of California-San Francisco followed nearly 950 smokers for their study, which revealed that e-cigarette use was not linked with higher rates of smokers quitting or smoking less after one year.

The study also found that women were more likely to be e-cigarette users.
