Study: Birth control pills could increase MS risk story image
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new study finds that birth control pills may increase a woman's risk of multiple sclerosis.

MS affects the nervous system, and most often hits between the ages of 20 and 40.

Researchers analyzed more than 300 women who'd been recently diagnosed with the disease, looking at their birth control history, and compared it to other women without MS.

They found those who used birth control pills were 35 percent more likely to develop MS than women who didn't.

As parts of the same study, researchers found that people who were obese at age 20 were twice as likely to develop MS as women who were not obese at that same age.
